Autograph letter signed, one page, 9 x 12,25 inch, Paris, 2.06.1938, in French, most likely addressed to Russian choreographer and ballet dancer Leonide Massine (1896-1979) - Dali enquires about the beginning of the construction of the stage set for his ballet `Bacchanale`* at the Metropolitan in New York in 1939, written and signed in dark ink "Salvador Dali" - the return address penned in the upper right corner is in the hand of his wife Gala Dali, attractively mounted (removable) for fine display with a photograph, shows Salvador Dali in front of an artwork (altogether 20,5 x 14,25 inch), with intersecting letter folds and mild signs of wear to the edges - in fine condition. "Cher Monsieur Je regrette de ne pas avoir déjeuné avec vous chez notre Ami commun le comte Etienne de Beaumont. Je vous serais tres reconnaissant de bien vouloir me preciser la date à la quelle la `Corporation Worlsart.inc.` commencera l`exécution des décors et les Répétitions de mon oeuvre qui lui a ete remise pour etre présentée cette saison d`été. Un mot de vous m`obligerait. Recevez Monsieur mes salutations distinguées - Salvador Dali" Translated: "I regret not having had lunch with you at our friend's house, Count Etienne de Beaumont**. I would be most grateful if you could tell me the date on which the `Corporation Worlsart.inc` will begin the performance of the sets and the Repetitions of my work which has been given to it to be presented this season. A word from you would oblige me. Receive my distinguished greetings - Salvador Dali" * Dali was signed up to write the libretto and the sets for `Bacchanale`, a ballet by Leonide Massine, the Russian choreographer who assisted Diaghilev`s Ballets russes from 1915 to 1921. After Diaghilev`s death, Massine helped to revitalize the Ballets russes creating a new company called `Ballets russes de Monte-Carlo`, co-founded in 1937 with Rene Blum and financed by the American businessman Julius Fleischmann, Jr.`s World Art Inc. ** Dali was a closefriend of Count Beaumont, who at that time was at the forefront of fashion and gave the most lavish balls in Paris, attended by other luminaries like Proust and Picasso.
