Typed letter signed, 1 1/2 pages (both sides), 8,5 x 11 inch, Büyükada* (Turkey), 18.01.1931, mostly in German (partly in English), to his publisher - disputing the publisher`s interpretation of many of the contracts provisions relating to the disposition of his manuscript and of the schedule for publication of work `The History of the Russian Revolution`, signed in blue ink "L. Trotzky", attractively mounted (removable) for fine display with a photograph, shows Leon Trotsky in a close-up portrait (altogether 16,5 x 11,75 inch), with mild intersecting letter folds, two small tears to the lower edge, and small paper losses to blank edges - in fine to very fine condition. In parts: "... Der von Ihnen unterzeichnete Vertrag sagt ganz unzweideutig, dass die Zahlung von 2500 Dollars nach Zustellung des Manuskriptes des ersten Bandes zu erfolgen hat (`two thousand five hundred Dollars upon the delivery of the manuscript of the first volume`), und nicht erst nach Ablieferung des gesamten Manuskriptes, wie Sie jetzt ganz willkürlich und dem Vertrage zuwider behaupten. (...) Translated: "... The contract you signed says unequivocally that the payment of 2500 dollars must be made after delivery of the manuscript of the first volume (`two thousand five hundred Dollars upon the delivery of the manuscript of the first volume`), and not only after delivery of the entire manuscript, as you now argue quite arbitrarily and contrary to the contract. (...) But if you see a breach of the contract in the delay, I believe that your publisher was much more at fault for the author. (...) As I have already told you, this has made it necessary to postpone the other-language, in particular the German and Russian editions by almost three months, which for me has extremely unfavorable ideological and material consequences. (...) Therefore, I have to ask you, after receiving this letter, to transfer the amount due, including the interest due on the day of delivery of the manuscript, by wire (the cable charges at your expense). I consider this a matter of course for maintaining the validity of the contract. Otherwise, I would feel obliged to put the matter in the hands of a lawyer..." * In February 1929, Trotsky was deported from the Soviet Union to his new exile in Turkey. In April 1929, Trotsky, his wife and son were moved to the island of Büyükada (aka Prinkipo) by the Turkish authorities.
