Smith, Hamilton Othanel
Handwritten manuscript signed, five pages, 8,5 x 11 inch, circa 1984, titled and signed in blue ink at the top "Molekular basis of restriction and modification in bacteria, Hamilton O. Smith, Dept of Mol. Biol & Genetics, JHU Medical School" - with numerous corrections, with puncher holes to the left edges and stapled at the upper left corner - in fine to very fine condition. In parts: "There are only a limited number of ways for bacteria to protect themselves against viral attack. One way is by antigenic variation of surface receptors, thus assuming that some bacteria in the population will escape infection. Another very effective way is by restriction and modification of DNA." Accompanied by an autographed letter signed, one page, 8,5 x 11 inch, `The Johns Hopkins University` letterhead, (Baltimore, Maryland), 18.09.1984, to " Karl" - transmitting the manuscript, describing it as "the first draft of an abstract ... for a lecture I am to deliver", written and signed in dark ink "Hamilton O. Smith", in very fine condition.
