Autographed saying signed, one page, 5 x 4 inch, Cortina d`Ampezzo, August 1926, partly in French and in English, the first paragraph is a quotation of his first manuscript book of verses `Sonnets And Other Verses`(1894) - the second paragraph contains Santayanas holograph explanation of the quotation, written and signed in black ink, mounted for fine display with a photograph, shows George Santayana in a close-up portrait (altogether 8,25 x 11,75 inch), in very fine condition.
"Quel besoin si pressant avez-vous de rimer,
Et qui ...vous pourre a vous faire imprimer ?
Si l`on peut pardonner l`effort d`un mauvais livre
Ce n`est qu`aux malheureux qui composent pour vivre,
etc.
I wrote these words of `Le Misanthrope` in my first manuscript book of verses, and I think they still apply to my poetry and to that of most other people
