Autograph letter signed, 2 1/4 pages - on two conjoined sheets (both sides), 4,5 x 6,75 inch, Paris, 31.01.1901, in French, to his son Lucien* - giving him advices for his artworks, written and signed in blue ink "C. Pissaro", with a central horizontal letter fold and mild soiling - in fine to very fine condition. Translation: "My dear Lusien, I was also afflicted with a cold but thankfully I'm now feeling better and able to keep track of what's going on around me. Your mother brought back news from her stay in Eragny that will thrill you. Paul [French painter Paul-Émile Pissarro (1884-1972), fifth and youngest son of Pissarro] had a keen eye and noticed two pieces of wood that looked innocuous. They are the ones you searched for so feverishly in all the house and I think the drawing is intact. I will send you the pieces along with the drawings I am redoing for you. I also find very appealing the general aspect of ploughing, you're right to keep on the lookout for further trials, keep the bold and supple aspect of the woodblock drawing, the relation between the dark and light spots must be deeper, as far as overall coloration goes I find it satisfying and when the second horse has its rump painted white that will be perfect! If everything went smoothly, your piece would have serious impact. You are asking for my opinion of your aim to produce a volume for each drawing? Do you not fear that the result would be meager and the interest will only be for the text? (...) Teissier still is not here and I do not see anything coming [Teissier was the family notary]. Four hundred engravings are heavy even without frames and Teissier does not know much about this but no point in despairing, he can be quite comical at times! I would send you one of my exhibition pamphlets but I do not have one. Give all our love to your wife and Kiddi [possibly nickname for Lucien's daughter, Orovida]." * Lucien Pissarro (1863-1944), the oldest of seven children of Pissarro, was a landscape painter, printmaker, wood engraver and designer, and printer of fine books. Until 1890, he worked in France, but thereafter was based in Britain.
