Maximilian II Emanuel, Elector of Bavaria
Letter signed, one page - addressed on the reverse of an adjoining sheet (with black wax seal), 7,75 x 12 inch, Monaco [Munich], 31.05.1679, in Italian, to cardinal Pallavicino - concerning the sudden death of his father Ferdinand Maria, Elector of Bavaria*, signed in black ink "Massimiliano Emanuel Elettore", with intersecting letter folds, mild soiling, six small cuts along the vertical edges and a small area of paper loss to the lower left edge (due to the wax seal) - in nearly fine condition. "1679 31. Maggio Emin[entissi]mo e Rev[erendissi]mo Sig[nor]e. Serve 9ta [/novita?] per raguagliar V[ostra] Em[inenz]a del funestis[si]mo accidente occorso li 26. del pros[si]mo pas[sa]to nella persona del Ser[enissi]mo Elett[or]e mio Sig[nor]e e Padre di glor[iosa] mem[oria], e per godere di quelli compatim[en]ti, che sono connaturali alle lei humanità. Mancò l'A. Sua E[minenza] di repentina morte, lasciando me, e Elett[ore] mia Casa in un mare d'afflittni. Con tutto ciò, sapendo la stima, che si deve al gran merito di V[ostra] Em[inenz]a, non iscordo di raccordarnelo con tal occ[assio]ne partmo, e desidmo dell' opp[ortuni]tà di ser[vir]la, resto Di V[ostra] Em[inenz]a Rev[erendissi]ma Affett[issi]mo Ser[vitor]e Massimiliano Emanuel Elettore Monaco l'ult[im]o Mag[gi]o 1679." Translation: "May 31, 1679 Very respected and venerable Sir. It serves to inform your Eminence of the most grievous accident that happened on the 26th of this month to the Serene Highness Elector, to My Lord and Father in glorious memory, and to feel the pity that is natural to your humanity. His Eminence is missing because of the sudden death, leaving me and Elector my house in a large amount of afflictions. With all this, considering the appreciation that is due to the great merit of your Eminence, I do not agree to associate you with this past occasion, I conclude, and I desire the opportunity to serve you. Your Most Venerable Eminence's Most devoted servant Elector Maximilian Emanuel Munich, on the last day of May 1679" * Ferdinand Maria, Elector of Bavaria (31 October 1636 - 26 May 1679) was a Wittelsbach ruler of Bavaria and an elector (Kurfürst) of the Holy Roman Empire from 1651 to 1679. He died at the Old Schleissheim Palace and was succeeded by his son Maximilian II Emanuel.
