Johnny Cash was born in Kingsland, Arkansas on February 26, 1932. His birth name was J.R. Cash, but he was known by his stage name, Johnny Cash. He was the fourth of seven children born to Ray and Carrie Cash. Johnny Cash had a tumultuous childhood, growing up in poverty and suffering from emotional issues that plagued him throughout his life.

Cash's music career began in 1954 when he moved to Memphis, Tennessee and signed a record deal with Sun Records. Cash became a major star, and his style of music, which was a combination of country, folk, and rockabilly, was dubbed "The Man In Black".
